Fastener Abbreviations

Fastener drawings and parts lists lean heavily on abbreviations to pack a lot of information — material, finish, thread class, head type — into a short callout. Misreading one of these is an easy way to order the wrong part, especially where a letter means one thing on a washer and something else entirely on a screw or nut. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why does the same abbreviation mean different things on different fasteners?

Many fastener abbreviations were established independently by different standards bodies and industries over time, so a letter code that means one thing on a washer (such as SAE meaning "small OD") can mean something else entirely on a screw or nut (SAE meaning fine thread) from the same body. Always check the abbreviation in the context of the specific fastener type it's applied to.

What does a hardness callout like "C-35" mean?

The letter identifies the hardness scale — C for Rockwell C — and the number is the hardness value on that scale. See our Hardness Comparison chart to compare it against other common scales.

Where can I find what a specific bolt grade marking means?

Bolt head markings (like 8.8 or 10.9) are covered separately on our Bolt Grades and Markings page, since they follow their own numbering system rather than a simple letter abbreviation.
