Steel SHS Dimensional Information
SHS (Square Hollow Section) is a cold-formed or hot-finished structural steel tube with an equal-sided square cross-section, valued in structural design for giving the same bending stiffness in both axes — useful for columns and members that need to resist load from more than one direction, and for its clean, uniform appearance in exposed architectural steelwork. The chart below gives dimensional and section property information for standard SHS sizes to BS EN 10219:1997 (cold-formed) and BS EN 10210-2:1997 (hot-finished).

What's the difference between hot-finished and cold-formed SHS?
Hot-finished SHS (to BS EN 10210) is formed and finished at high temperature, giving lower residual stress and generally better buckling resistance; cold-formed SHS (to BS EN 10219) is formed at room temperature from strip, which is typically more cost-effective but has higher residual stresses from the forming process. For UK structural applications where buckling resistance matters, hot-finished sections are often preferred.
When would I use SHS instead of RHS or CHS?
SHS suits members loaded in more than one direction that benefit from equal stiffness both ways, and gives a clean square profile for architecturally exposed steelwork. RHS suits members where load is predominantly in one direction and a deeper section improves bending efficiency. CHS gives the best strength-to-weight ratio in pure compression and the highest torsional stiffness, at the cost of more complex end connections.
What section properties are given in the chart?
Typically overall dimensions, wall thickness, mass per metre, cross-sectional area, and second moment of area — the values needed for both material takeoff and structural design calculations.
